The ingredients needed to cook Moong Dal Khichdi:

  1. Take 1/2 cup of moong dal (split).
  2. Provide 1/2 cup of rice.
  3. Provide 1 tbsp of ghee or oil.
  4. You need 1 tsp of cumin seeds.
  5. Prepare 1 of bay leaf.
  6. You need 1 pinch of asafoetida (hing).
  7. You need 1 of onion finely chopped.
  8. Provide 1 of green chilli chopped.
  9. Prepare 1/2 inch of ginger grated.
  10. You need 1 of tomato finely chopped.
  11. Provide 1/4 tsp of turmeric powder.
  12. You need To taste of salt.
  13. Prepare as needed of water.
  14. Get 2 tbsp of chopped coriander leaves.

Steps to make Moong Dal Khichdi:

  1. Wash rice and dal together for a couple of times. Drain water completely and keep them aside..
  2. Heat ghee or oil in a pan and saute cumin seeds and bay leaf on a low flame for 1 minute..
  3. Add onion, green chilli, ginger and hing. Fry till onion turns translucent..
  4. Add tomato and cook till it turns soft and mushy..
  5. Add turmeric powder, salt and saute for few seconds. Add little water and cook for a minute or two..
  6. Now add drained moong dal and rice. Saute on a low flame for 3-4 minutes or till moong dal turns aromatic..
  7. Pour water and stir well. Season with salt. Then transfer it to a pressure cooker. Close the lid and pressure cook for 2 whistles on a medium flame for grainy consistency. And for porridge consistency cook for 4 whistles..
  8. Once the pressure settles, open the lid, add coriander leaves and mix gently..
  9. Finally serve moong dal khichdi hot or warm with curd or pickles..
